La Geria Vineyards #4

The ground where the vineyards of La Geria grow is covered with a layer of dried lava from the eruption of Timanfaya in 1730. Thousands of small low walls in a single semicircular row have been patiently erected by the winegrowers. They protect the vines from the dry and hot wind of the region. These walls are called zocos.

Seen from the sky, they form a regular pattern reminiscent of cells.

Each vine stock is planted at a sufficient depth for the roots to reach the arable soil which covered the region before the eruption of 1730. A slight slope leading to the foot of the stock and the dew provide the little humidity necessary for growth of the vine.
